Comments: I was going through my cds the other day and came across the Payneful Truth. I then thought of the t-shirt I have that I had tie-dyed of the same image from the cover of the cd. I still have that too. I figured i would look for Brad on facebook, and obviously thorough my searching I found out about his passing. I am so sorry for your loss. He was a very talented musician and at the time I got to see him, he impacted my life with his music. I worked at this restaurant in Waves NC, Pescado's the summer of 96' and Brad played there often. I shared his songs with my father, who then began writing music again, all inspired by Brad. Sometimes in life there are these pivotal moments that you have when it comes to experience, growing up and moving on. That was my summer. The Payneful Truth was my soundtrack.

Comments: I am saddened to hear about Brad’s untimely passing from a fellow coastie. I spent an interesting 3 months as Brad’s roommate while we were attending CG training on Governors Island, NY in the fall of 1989. We shared a huge barracks room affectionately called “The Swamp” from the movie MASH due to the weirdness that happened in there. We always had visitors come by to hear him play, Brad always seemed to have his guitar in hand and was ready to strum a tune for all of us to enjoy. He was a natural talent and truly loved music; he could play any song that anyone could throw at him, he was like a human juke box. I am pleased to see that he has touched so many people through his music and kind nature, it’s so rare that one finds their calling and gets to do what they love and actually have the courage to pursue their dreams. RIP Brad, you may be gone but are certainly not forgotten- Mike

Comments: Brad and I were in the Coast Guard together and had a lot of good times back in the late 80s. I'll remember him as a kind person, a fine musician and a good friend. While we were at the CGs Training center on Governors Island, NY he complained that he wasn't able to play his electric guitar because he didn't have amp with him, so (being an electronic hobbyist) I built him a small amp that he could plug a pair of headphones into. I also helped him replace the engine in that old beat up black VW beetle he used to be so found of...Brad, you remember when the back seat of that VW caught fire on the ferry? We all need to be good to our friends and family because we never know how much time we'll have together...

Comments: I met Brad in Monroe, LA in 1998 and flew from TX to JAX to visit him back in 2000. Many of the photographs of him playing live were taken my myself, and I did a few watercolor paintings from them. I still have them. I gave Brad a very unique drawing of Jim Morrison that I would like to have returned as a memento of our friendship, in exchange for the watercolors of Brad. The relationship I had with Brad was of two artists from different disciplines who liked to challenge each other. I am in shock - total shock - of his passing and I will remember him fondly. May God rest his gifted soul.

Comments: What a terrible loss! We just learned of Brad's passing through friends who visited the website after we told them that they needed to find Brad and enjoy his music while in St. Augustine late this month. He obviously touched many people with his talent. We still talk about how we stumbled onto him on a trip to St. Augustine several years ago, following the sound of his music and voice until we found him. Since that first encounter we located him every visit we made back to St. Augustine and he always remembered us. He once invited us back to his home to give us a tour of his recording studio. He was truly proud of his abilities and with good reason. I'm happy to say that we came to know him and had the opportunity to enjoy his talent several times. The CD's we own now have a renewed value. Although late, our condolensces to wife Michelle and Brad's daughter.

Comments: Twelve years ago today we buried Brad's Grannie. That was the first time we heard his song Ode to Stella Ray. Finally he arrived, He Drove his bike right up onto the deck/entrance of the bar, I can still see him with long hair flowing and his trademark black tank top... Comments: wow, i really don't know what to say... it seems that everyone has said it all... over the years i had always tried to check the website every couple of months or so to see how my favorite musician in the world was doing... and today i find this... I met brad when i was in college and working at chelsea's st pub in wichita falls (mid/late 90's)... he had to have been one of the most talented live performers i had ever met and a great guy to just be around... whether it would be helping him unload the trailer and set up, jumping up on stage and singing back-up on a song or two or just kicking back when he would come to show his support for other local bands from the area (and sometimes sing w/) like AA Bottom or Bowling for Soup... wow, this is like a kick in the gut, but we all know that he IS in a better place even though we feel cheated of the times to come that will never be... god bless you Brad and may we meet again, down that gypsy road that you so loved!

Comments: I met Brad 2 yrs ago and sang a couple of songs with him on stage.He told me to contact him when I was coming back and he would sned me his set list so I could do an entire set with him.I was just doing so for my trip Feb 7th when I read the tragic news. I was deeply saddened to say the least. St. Augustine has lost a very talented and cool musician.

Comments: I cant believe he's gone. I am so saddened to find out about Brads illness/passing online. I last saw him play mid Nov - he looked well and wonderful. My condolences to his wife and daughter, you may find several portraits I painted of Brad in his belongings and I think there are some more in my attic. Brad was a great man as well as a musician. Comments: I have been enjoying Brad's music for many years now, every Summer when we head to St. Augustine for our annual family reunion. 2 Summers ago a large group of us went to see him play on a day that it was about 110 degrees. He wasn't going to appear due to the heat, but found out we were all waiting for him. He not only played for us, but also recorded a personal CD for us that day. Out first date was to see Brad play and we were at the live recording he did at Chealsea Street. He had family in the area near Wichita Falls and frequented this area often back then. I always figured we would eventually run into him again as I kept track of the places he was and hoped he would either come back here to visit and play or we wold make it to Florida on vacation and see him. Brad and I became great friends some 17 years ago in Elizabeth City, NC. I met Brad for the first time in a place called Sweetbriars and we became friends immediately. He always allowed me to sing American Pie together and play my tenor sax with him on stage. We had so many great times together. His music, his passion for life and his desire to touch others was intoxicating to many. Comments: What a shock. I hadn't seen Brad in a while but I stopped in on him at Pizza Alley about 3 weeks ago. I'm glad I did. He invited me up to sing (as he always did) and I sang a harmony with him but told him I had only about a half an hour to stay and would rather hear him than sing myself. Comments: Brad and I spent many nights hanging out when he lived in Elizabeth City. But one night has been on my mind more than any other lately. It was after one of the countless nights he played at Sweetbriars and we had gone out because Brad wanted to speak with the owner of the bar who lived on a boat that was tied at the dock acrossed the street. I decided to stay on the dock because it would have been hard for me to climb on the boat .. I have cerebral palsy and walk with crutches. Well Brad went aboard and while I was waiting one of my crutches slipped and I had to let it go to keep from falling in the water myself, when Brad came back and found out that one of my crutches had fallen in he started to go in after it and would have if I hadn't stopped him. It didn't matter to him that it was freezing cold and that the water was over 30 feet deep It's that selfless attitude that I will always remember

Comments: We stopped to listen at the outdoor cafe while in St Augustine a week and a half ago. You were telling a bit of your history and mentioned that you'd had some tragedy in your life. The past couple of years have also been tragic for us (20 year old daughter died in a motorcycle accident August 2005, then two other deaths in immediate family.) We karaoked at "Night Flight" on a Thurs. night and went back Friday and Sat. nights to hear this band named "Sounds of August." We really fell in love with the lead singer...this very talented, handsome guy named Brad Payne. I even got his autograph on the back of one of my bank deposit slips. I was sitting here wondering whatever became of him today and put his name in search and HERE YOU ARE!!! I listened to your new music and I recognized that same wonderful voice I heard many years ago. I almost didn't recognize YOU at first because your hair was very short then. I'm the truck driver from Grassy Butte, North Dakota...anyway, we never forgot you and whenever our snotty friends talk about the famous snobs they know, my wife and I brag about Brad Payne from St. Augustine (I know, you're from Wyoming) and we talk about you like you're Elvis or something... which gets us all kinds of snotty looks. Well, our 4th anniversary is coming up and my wife ain't the easiest person to shop for...and I was hoping that you had some new music out. I see from your site here that you do, but there ain't no order form for it. Maybe you just didn't get around to posting it yet, but our anniversary is on the 23rd of June, and I'd sure like to get my hands on that new CD of yours...for my wife, of course. If it's available for public consumption, let me know how much it is and I'll send you the money. By the way, we have a 2 1/2 year old boy named Jack Aubrey Darcy (notice, he's named after the fictional sailor Jack Aubrey from the series by the late Patrick O'Brian...it's ok if you don't know what I'm talking about). Well, like I was saying, we never forgot you and for some tragic reason, it seems that you were the high point of the honeymoon for my wife (just kidding). Yes, you were a fine musician, but you were also a real gentleman that night and we both thought that it was awful nice of you to visit with us at our table. Sorry we didn't make it out fishing that night, but my wife really wimped out after eating and drinking so much...of course, she regrets it to this day and complains to me that I didn't roust her up more to go out. Oh, well...kinda funny writing to someone like this that you ain't seen for about four years and that you only seen for a couple hours, but I guess that says something about the impression you make with your music and the impression you make as a man in your behaviour towards others. Comments: I saw a show today in St. Augustine that somehow made me lose track of time. The group I was with wanted to watch a football game so we searched for the closest TV and found it along with my new favorite traveling minstrel. Typically a guy in a bar with a guitar isn't enough to hold my interest for more than a set but I had a great time today. More than just the place I was in; those old songs and some originals were presented in such a way that they all seemed fresh and timeless at the same time. I am a fan now, though somewhat grudgingly, for fear of being like one of the many, many "groupies" Brad seems to have aquired. I would say that I think Brad is a very talented artist but I'm afraid that might sound cliche. It doesn't fit him; he is anything but cliche on stage. I think that is the best compliment I could give. thanks for a such a real show.
